Is it important to have the home page rank high?

Postby Vash » Sun Feb 10, 2013 7:33 am

It is easier to rank fairly high on the SERP with some content pages, but the home page usually does not have a lot of information about the niche, and it is not common to write a long article on the home page. So in the end the home page is harder to rank high in SERP.

I am not sure if it is important to have the home page to rank high for the site's keyword.
People often do not land on the home page anyway. Usually they found some content page through search engines.

So what is your opinion on this?
Is Important for home page to rank high or it is irrelevant if you have high ranking content pages?

By the way, will the content pages pass SEO juice to the home page? Or the other hand around? Or both?
I am wondering if by adding more and more useful content pages, the home page SERP as well as google page rank will also go up? How about the other way around?

It depends on the type of site really. Do you want your visitors coming to the index page daily, like a blog? Or do you plan to have a lot of heavy hitting internal pages that are likely to bring people directly to those pages?

Most visitors don't care about homepage rankings, it's the internal pages that matter.

Of course the goal is to have the content pages rank high in SERP, but I was just wondering if a high ranking home page would also benefit the rest of the deeper pages as far as SEO go... like passing down some juice to them to help them to rank high.

It doesn't really matter though, if you are getting visitors to your content than you should be happy about it.

But if you are getting a lot of visitors to your content page and they never are checking the home page, than you have something to worry about. Your visitors are not liking your content and they are leaving immediately.

This is very true. Most visitors arrive to your site via content page. Those who browse around will naturally visit the home page.

Its not important but it should be great to have a higher pr on the home. However traffic is more important above all. Traffic is what mostly webmasters want because its what make the money so its never thier desire to have higher pr unless you are selling links.

Just how the page ranks effecting each other for different pages under the same domain?

Does Google give PR to the main (home) page first, then pass the juice down to deeper pages, or is it the other way around? Or neither of them affect each other?

If it is not important, then wouldn't it mean the last option is true?

Since all high PR domains also have high PRs for their deeper pages. If your home page (root domain) doesn't rank high, it is most likely none of the deeper pages rank high either. Isn't it?

Your homepage is like a huge intersection, from there people will go all directions. So it's important to have your homepage ranked as #1, as many people will be having a first impression on your homepage first and will continue on browsing your website.

Dark is correct.
Not only this, but it helps to rank every piece of content that you put on your webpage. So if your home page ranks highly, then your blog articles will also rank highly.

Think of wikipedia. When you type in almost any subject, wikipedia pops up first the majority of the time because they are ranked highly, even if its not a popular page on wikipedia.
